Join us
We are a friendly and growing team of researchers with complementary expertise in different aspects of experimental and computational physics, working at the intersections with other disciplines.
Our network of international collaborators includes physicists, engineers, chemists, computer scientists, biologists, medics and clinicians - to name a few.
We are always on the lookout for new talented and enthusiastic group members, including those from diverse career paths and backgrounds, and those who have taken career breaks.
If you’d be interested in joining us, please get in touch.
PhD opportunities
We are delighted to have successfully recruited to the opportunity described below, but please review the project to get a flavour of the sort of research in which our students are engaged.
Computational modelling and testing of inverse Compton scattering sources for medical applications
Supervisors: Dr Jenny Spiga and Dr Sarah Bugby
Radiotherapy is an effective way to treat tumours. However, not all cancers can be treated with radiotherapy. The potential of new therapies - including Microbeam Radiation Therapy (MRT) - is being explored in synchrotrons around the world.
The successful candidate will simulate and test newly available X-ray sources in France and Italy for potential use in MRT and imaging.
Funding options for PhDs
Self- and government-funded students are welcome to get in touch to discuss their research aspirations and whether ARMPG would be a good fit.
If you would be interested in a PhD position in our group, but do not currently have funding, please browse the links below. If you identify an appropriate source of funding, we can work with you to prepare your application.
Institute of Physics Bell Burnell Graduate Scholarship Fund
Supports students from groups under-represented in physics who wish to complete a physics doctorate. Applications are typically open from October – mid-January.
Commonwealth Scholarships
Scholarships available for applicants for certain eligible Commonwealth countries. Applications typically open in October – November. Split site scholarships are also available, which would let you spend a year studying in the UK as part of a PhD in your home country.
Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future Fellowships
Awarded to women from developing and emerging countries to pursue PhD research in STEM subjects. Applications typically open from September - November.
Postdoctoral positions
We are happy to discuss hosting researchers with personal fellowships and funding, including supporting you through the application process.
We also welcome queries from more senior researchers with personal fellowships who wish to relocate to Loughborough.
Please get in touch to discuss possible options, including the following postdoctoral funding schemes.
Daphne Jackson Fellowships
Fellowships for researchers returning to academia after a career break of two or more years for family, health or caring reasons. Jenny Spiga is a former Daphne Jackson Fellow. Rolling application process.
Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowships
Independent research fellowships for those who require a flexible working pattern. Applications open September - October.
EPSRC Postdoctoral Fellowships
Both open and responsive mode offered. There are no upper limits on time-since-PhD and applications are welcome from those who have followed non-traditional pathways into research, or who need to work part-time. Applications expected to open around May - July.
Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships
Three year independent research fellowships. Note that research in medical applications is rarely within the Leverhulme Trust’s remit. Typical application deadlines in February.
Marie Sk艂odowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships
For researchers who have not resided in UK for more than 12 months of the last three years. Applications open April - September.
MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowships
Available at both post- and pre-doctoral levels, specifically for registered healthcare professionals who are interested in pursuing a research career. Applications open October - January.
Newton International Fellowships
Three year fellowships for non-UK researchers who wish to conduct research in a UK institution. Fasil Dejene is a former Newton International Fellow. Applications open January - March.
Royal Commission 1851 Fellowships
For applicants with three years or less postdoctoral experience, to conduct innovative independent research. Applications open October - January.
